November 18th, 2003 In an effort to continue to host an enduro at the Rattlesnake Bay riding area, the President of the Mississippi Hi-Point is in correspondence with the Forrest Service. To keep members informed, we are posting the correspondence to keep you up to date.
The first letter was a propsal to incorporate enduro-prep into a general trail rehab project: Visit Trail Tales for the letters.
Who Are We & What Are We Doing Here? "We" would be the Mississippi Hi-Point Enduro Riders, Inc.For the most part, we are a loosely organized group of hard-core off-road motorcycle riders/racers who ride enduros, hare-scramble, an occasional moto-cross event and host enduro and hare-scramble events in conjunction with the Southern Enduro Riders Association and actually enjoy a casual trail-ride one or twice a year when time permits. With this web site, we hope to be able to keep current information readily available to club members, fellow racers who might be wondering what we've been up to and anyone who might benefit from stumbling onto the occasional bit of news relating to the logistics of keeping an off-road club in operation. With the close relationship that we have built with the U.S. Forest Service over the last dozen or so years and our affiliation with the Rattlesnake Bay OHV Trail, this site should prove invaluable as a means of distributing information about the status of riding opportunities in the South Mississippi area. With the launch of this web site the Mississippi Hi-Point Enduro Riders have taken a leap into the 21st Century. We hope that this effort proves beneficial to not only our club, but all riders who happen to visit. With a little luck and some time to gain experience, we hope to be able to serve the off-road community for many years to come. Thank you for your interest in the Mississippi Hi-Point Enduro Riders Home Page and, please, drop by again soon.
"Vintage Off-Road Humor..." Back in the simpler times of the Twentieth Century, there was actually a time when one (or several) could enjoy what would now fall under the heading of a dual-sport ride on any day of the week in virtually any National Forest without having to be concerned with details such as street-legal motorcycles and license plates, etc. Then with a quick 'stroke of the pen' some insightful Forest Service executive made it a crime against humanity to operate an unlicensed vehicle on a public road in our National Forests. While I appreciate the gesture and the desire to save us all from ourselves, I have always had a bit of a problem with the zeal in which the typical Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer in my neighborhood enforces this particular ordinance. I'm all for obeying laws that make a certain amount of sense, but I question the manner in which some individuals perform their job. I have actually stated to at least one Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer with whom I am acquainted that "it would sure be nice if all government employees were that serious about doing their jobs..." After the 1995 'Bear Whiz Enduro Incident' in which a couple of Forest Service L.E.O.'s took the opportunity to treat a few dozen enduro riders like some kind of Anti-American Third-World Terrorists, I went on something of a personal crusade seeking a degree of justice from a "system" which I believed to be out of control and in need of some major adjustment. While I did not get everything I wanted out of the mission, I did succeed in making an impression on at least a few of our friends at the Forest Service. Of course the struggle continues... In late 1996 (when the dust had settled, but some of the wounds still had not fully healed) I was searching the depths of my seiously over-worked yet amazingly perceptive mind for yet another scholarly dissertation on the finer points of off-road riding for the pages of Dirt Pilot Magazine when, for reasons we may never fully understand,I was inspired to enlist the services of an associate who happens to be quite talented in the art of cartoonism. The product of our collaboration was never published due to the untimely demise of Dirt Pilot, so, my friends, you now have the opportunity to gaze upon the last installment I ever produced for my original HOURED OUT column on the 'back page' of Dirt Pilot Magazine. Much like a fine wine, I believe it has only gotten better with time... HOURED OUT "Season's Greetings..."
Early in my career as a prolific and world-famous off-road motojournalist, I harbored delusions that by writing insightful and informative articles of literature, I might actually inspire people to participate more in the struggle to preserve our right to ride dirt-bikes. After almost four years, however, I have become painfully aware that, for the most part an attempt at humor fares much better than even the most concise and conscientious column about the facts of off-road life.
